Outdoor Adventure Kids (OAK)
Family Adventure and Nature Education Program

Mission:  To reconnect youth to the natural world and promote environmental stewardship through participation in recreational outdoor activities.

Explore your world, learn about Louisiana natural sciences, and gain respect and appreciation for the plants and animals with which we coexist.  OAK offers year-round opportunities for children and families to visit various Louisiana trails and waterways.  We organize and provide all equipment for all Outdoor Adventure Kids guided family hikes and paddles to various State Parks, Nature/Interpretive Centers and the Kisatchie National Forest.

Open to ages 4 and up.  At least one parent or guardian is required to attend.

“Passion is lifted from the earth itself by the muddy hands of the young; it travels along grass-stained sleeves to the heart. If we are going to save environmentalism and the environment, we must also save an endangered indicator species: the child in nature.”
Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder

Nature Heals

Spending time outdoors can significantly improve the health and well being of our children.

Studies agree that kids who play outside are smarter, happier, more attentive, and less anxious than kids who spend more time indoors.

For more on why nature is good for the minds of children check out this article from the Child Mind Institute.

Get Involved as a Guest Scientist or Volunteer Adventure Guide

LASOAR supports State Parks and the local science community helping to educate youth about the preservation and conservation of species and habitat vital to our world.

Through an educational grant from the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, we are able to collaborate with Interpretive Rangers, Botanist, Herpetologists, and other scientists and outdoor enthusiasts who we invite to attend our trips and share their knowledge with OAK participants. These Guest Scientist and Volunteer Adventure Guides contribute to the quality of each OAK trip by providing instruction and assistance with identification of natural phenomenon and flora and fauna observable along our trip.

To become a Guest Scientist or Volunteer Adventure Guide, email laura@lasoar.org.
