Trail Running Club

Get fit, explorer style! (Ages 5-18)

Trail running is a great way to stay in shape and enjoy the outdoors.  Get away from the screen and get outside!  Surround yourself with the sights and sounds of nature and run for fun, with the safety of a group.

The LASOAR mission is to reconnect children with the natural world and promote the power of play to improve child and family health and well-being.

Runners will have the opportunity to learn about their natural surroundings through various natural science and environmental education activities throughout the day. 

All trails runs are guided by highly qualified Volunteer Community Leaders and Experts in Trail Running Practices and Techniques.

All you need is a good pair of trail running shoes and the courage to go the distance.

Program Levels:

Level I:  Ages 5-6

  • Maximum Trail Running distances:  0.5-1.5 miles
  • Minimal Obstacles
  • Lessons on Trail Safety and Running Techniques

Level II:  Ages 7-12

  • Maximum Trail Running distances:  1.5-3.0 miles
  • Moderate Obstacles
  • Lessons on Trail Safety and Running Techniques

Level III:  Ages 13-18

  • Maximum Trail Running distances of 3.0 - 10 miles
  • More Advances Obstacles
  • Leadership Opportunities for Young Runners

Trail Running Club Schedule:  

Run 1:  Lake Martin, Saturday, May 21st
10:00-11:30 am Trail Run (All levels welcome.)
11:30-12:00  Lunch and Tour the Cypress Island Nature Conservancy

Run 2:  Acadiana Park, Saturday, June 4
8:30-10:30 am Trail Run (All levels welcome.)
10:30-11:30 Lunch and Group Activity at the Nature Center

Run 3:  Chicot State Park Arboretum, Saturday, July 2
10:00-11:00 am Jr. Ranger Program*
11:00 - 12:30 am Trail Run (All levels welcome.)
12:30 - 1:30 Lunch at the Caroline Dorman Lodge
2:00 - 3:00 Jr. Ranger Alligator Class*
*Participation in the Jr. Ranger program is optional.  Participants will earn a Jr. Ranger Badge and Certificate upon completion.  Please RSVP by Friday, June 24th.

             9:30-10:00  Snacks and Water Play (Bring swimsuit and a change of clothes!)

Run 6:  Kisatchie National Forest- Saturday, October 1st

Run 7:  Acadiana Park, Lafayette, LA- Saturday, November 5th


Yearly Dues:

Feel a sense of wonder and community as the Hiking Club discovers new trails, stops to play in the dirt, and learns to identify local plants and animals using sight and sound.  

As an OAK Hiking Club member, you will receive admission to all 8 trips, an OAK Hiker T-shirt with a completion stripe (to be added to your shirt sleeve) at the end of each year showing your participation in our program as well as a  FREE Members-only end-of-the-year primitive camping excursion.
